Blog Assignment 6- Native American Treatment and Removal in the 1800s

Over the past unit we have studied and discussed how the United States moved from being a country of 13 states along the Atlantic Coast to a vast area reaching all the way to the Pacific Ocean. We looked at the explorers that traveled the new vast land and finally today we talked about the settlers and pioneers that risked everything to move West. Unfortunately the expansion and settlement was was not positive for everyone. The Native Americans were often moved from their land onto reservations in areas like Oklahoma. Those who resisted were forced by the military and many many died from disease. Read pages 368-369 in your book. It gives an example of this when in 1830 President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act to make the Cherokee Tribe leave Florida.  For this blog assignment you need to write at least six sentences summing up what happened to the Cherokee on the pages you read, write how it makes you feel, and then tell me how things could have been done differently.

  1. The Cherokee Indians being moved out of Florida makes me feel like I have been cheated in a game. I don't think the Cherokee Indians were very happy about this. I think the states could have at least tried to negotiate about kicking them out of the states rather than just forcing them out without warning. I think we were a little selfish about what we did. I think another thing we could have done is trade them something for this land. We could have also made them our allies so that they would understand.

  3. When the Cherokee were forced to move out of Florida, I feel like President Jackson had disobeyed God. Mainly because He says that all men were created. The Cherokee hadn't done anything to us, so why should we have done anything to them? From reading this passage I think President Jackson was a strong supporter of Manifest Destiny. In my opinion we could have achieved Manifest Destiny easily If we had gone around those and other Indian territories. In some ways we could have made peace with the Indians. Or maybe we could have gone around Indian territories. After the Indian Removal Act I could say that those Indians weren't supporters of the US.

  5. The Cherokee Indians were living peacefully with the settlers that had come into their area. The Indians' land was being taken away by the Americans. The Indians protested against this. The President,Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act but the Indians didn't obey the act. Martin Van Buren, the next president elected, sent the United States Army to force the Cherokees to go to an Indian Reservation in Oklahoma. The Indians should have been treated differently. The settlers could have traded with them for their land. We were selfish and took away their land without warning. We could have taken part of their land and left them more land for their families.I feel we acted too harshly and too suddenly. I feel sorry for the Indians.

  6. The Cherokee were living a great life until the gold seekers came. They were sent out of their land because President Jackson made a new Act. They were sent out on a trail called the Trail of Tears. Many Indians died of heat, starvation and thirst. I think it could've been handled in a way where we and the Indians split the land 50/50 instead of kicking them out. I feel sorry for the innocent Indians who died. .........Parker 2nd period

  7. I think President Andrew Jackson was wrong to send the Indians away. Sending them away to the West was not ok. This is like thousands of Indians having to pack there lives and homes away. Though thousands of people packed away and went, along with that, thousands died on the trip West past the Mississippi river. The Charokee Indians did not just have to pack there lives up and move, they also had to leave a lot of animals and supplies behind. It would have been better if Andrew Jackson would not have be so selfish and just let the Cherokee tribe live in peace because all he wanted was the gold and riches and goods that came with the lands. If I were Andrew Jackson I would just leave the Cherokee Indians alone.

  8. i think we should have treated the cherokee indain tribe better. WE should have let them chose where thay want to stay or stay where they are. i have a ? to ask you if of that tribe at that time how would you want to be treated like them or in a nicer way?if we didnt relocate them most of there tribe and children would still live on today. i think its very mean we put the cherokee indain tribe in extincion. or we cold have nicly made a treaty with them. ...................................................Joe McCain 2nd period

  9. What happened to the cherokee indians is that they got kicked out of Flordia. The indan removal act which brought all indians to Oklahoma. They had to leave their lands. They went to court and lost. They had to walk about 800 miles through bad weather. The soldiers guarded them so they couldn't leave and escape back to Flordia. Thousands died and it was very sad. The place many died was called the Trail of Tears.
